Jeanne beats medical woes to finish Kona
An hour-long stop won't defeat her
Punk Rock Racing athlete Jeanne DeBonis is one determined woman. She's come back from an Olympic Trials-ending car wreck and finished an Ironman after breaking ribs, and Saturday was no exception.
After a fantastic return to the world of full Ironman triathlons, Jeanne earned a spot in Saturday's Ironman World Championships in Kona, Hawaii. She finished the 2.4-mile swim in a speedy 1:02:34, then cycled 112 miles in 5:39:52. By then, she'd moved up to fifth place in her division.
Jeanne took off at a fast pace on the 26.2 mile run, averaging about 8:10 per mile for the first 10 miles. Then disaster struck, and she was stuck in the medical tent. Staff there tried to convince her to withdraw, but Jeanne refused. After an hour in the medical tent, she resumed the run.
Despite the huge setback, Jeanne managed to finish in 11:28:48. We still aren't sure how she did it, but we certainly are proud of her.
