Sonja wins Santa Cruz triathlon

She's off to Kona this weekend

What do you do when you’re in town training for the Ironman World Championship with your coach and there’s a local Olympic distance triathlon just a short drive away? Well, if you’re Punk Rock Racing’s elite athlete Sonja Wieck, you sign up for the darn thing. And you win it.

Yes, Sonja was in California wrapping up one of her final Kona training weeks when she decided to enter the Santa Cruz Triathlon. Once again, she executed a solid race plan and found herself not only winning her age group but taking the top women's spot of the day.

This was no easy task. This event, because of its proximity to the Ironman World Championship in Kona, draws many of the top age groupers in the area to the race, and Sonja had to work for the win.

The race saw Sonja battling with fellow age grouper Christine Bare on the bike, but it was the run where Sonja pushed the pace, took control and secured the top spot with a finish time of 2:13:55.

On Saturday, October 12, Sonja will be racing Kona again. She is hands down the toughest athlete we know, and she does not cut any corners when it comes to putting in the countless hours required to consistently finish at the top. Sonja’s results are the product of her dedication and hard work, and we know that on Saturday she will put everything she has into the day. Punk Rock Racing could not be more proud of Sonja and we are honored to be associated with one of the finest ambassadors of the sport.

Congratulations to Sonja on the win in Santa Cruz and we wish her all the best in Kona.
